British Powerlifting is the recognised National Governing Body (NGB) for powerlifting in the UK, with a rich history of athlete achievement at all levels, a diverse and engaged membership base which has seen impressive year on year growth, and a strong foundation for progress. As the organisation scales to meet the ever-increasing popularity of strength sports and develop its core infrastructure, we are seeking to appoint a pragmatic and driven individual to oversee the CEO and Board of Directors as we shape the future of the sport in the UK and build a robust platform for growth and operational excellence.

Role Overview

The Chair of the Board of Directors will be an independent and strategic thinker, experienced in leading and motivating others through periods of change while maintaining high standards of performance.

With a collaborative approach, you will bring an excellent understanding of good governance, sound judgement, and be comfortable navigating complexity and leading diverse teams.

Board Leadership:
  • Lead on the execution of the strategic plan, ensuring robust Board discussions and judgements on matters of strategy, performance, stakeholder engagement and governance.
  • Chair Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting, acting as a member of any operational Committees of the Board as necessary.
  • Have oversight of the Chief Executive Officer, holding them to account for ensuring that Board decisions are executed in good order while maintaining a high level of staff morale, commitment and motivation.
  • Ensure that the Board acts with integrity and takes a balanced and thoughtful approach to decision making; ensuring that decisions are taken in the best and longterm collective interests of the federation.
Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, clubs, sponsors, and partners
  • Represent British Powerlifting at national and international events, conferences, and championships as necessary ▪ Act as a positive spokesperson for British Powerlifting, promoting its achievements and advocating for the sport.
Governance and Compliance:
  • Proactively hold the Board of Directors to account to ensure effective governance and decision-making.
  • Provide thoughtful challenge to the Board and operational committees in all aspects of governance and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including antidoping, safeguarding and equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Ensure adherence to British Powerlifting Articles of Association and fulfilling any specific duties outlined in governing documents.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role, preferably within a sports organisation or NGB
  • Experience of operating in a Chair position, whether in a Board, Executive or Committee environment
  • Strong strategic planning and operational management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to act as a compelling ambassador for British Powerlifting
  • Knowledge of the sport of powerlifting and its governing structures is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of governance documentation, policies and regulatory frameworks
