We are very sad to announce that one of our long standing members George Leggett has recently passed away at the age of 88. We convey our deepest sympathy to his wife Midge and all his family. George was a top coach, international referee, international lifter and recipient of the British Powerlifting Lifetime Achievement Award. In the days of the BAWLA, George was the British Team Coach for several years and achieved many outstanding results.

68 GBR lifters went to these championships in Belarus and achieved excellent results. We won some 90 medals, 55 for the masters and 35 for the Sub-Juniors, Juniors and Seniors. A successful event for GBR, particularly in the Masters, but in the Open categories the very strong opposition denied us all but one podium place overall. This was Joy Nnamani who took the Bronze in the women's 52kg class. Our World Champions were Bradley May (SJ 120+kg), Mark MacQueen (Junior 120kg), David Gray (M2 66kg), Robert Rodney (M2 93kg), Colin Wright (M2 120kg), Ernie Parkes (M4 83kg), Louise Richardson (M1 72kg), Jackie Blasbery (M2 84kg) and Marina Cornwall (M3 47kg).

The date for these has been put back one week to 9/10th December, due to a venue change to Stanhope Hall, Horncastle. This is an extra championship to facilitate selections for the new European Classic Masters Championships, which are in March 2018. A normal British Masters Classic will be held October 2018.

Karl Merrett was tested at the Northern Ireland Push Pull Championships 6th May 2017 and his urine sample was found to contain Metandienone (S1,1a) and Tamoxifen (S4.2) which are prohibited substances under the WADA Code. He is therefore banned for a period of four years effective from June 12th 2017.

British Powerlifting is the only UK powerlifting organisation that carries out independent WADA compliant drug testing. In 2017 we conducted some 140 anti-doping tests, all at our own expense. GB lifters in World Championships are registered with the IPF for Out of Competition Testing (OCT).
