Competitions

British Powerlifting has a comprehensive competition programme starting at local level and progressing through national up to British Championships. These attract a large number of lifters, for example over 400 athletes competed in the 2015 British Classic Championships. We send teams to all European and World Championships across all the age groups and disciplines with a high degree of success.

You are never too young or old to make a start in powerlifting; competitors aged 14 year and upwards are welcome. Equally, you are never too old. Several 70+ competitors still represent Britain internationally and many 'masters' lifters only take the sport up in their 40s or 50s. Powerlifting is a great sport with an unrivalled camaraderie which promotes health, strength and vitality. If you decide to take your first steps in the sport and want to lift in an independently drug tested organisation with an established network of local divisions, choose British Powerlifting.

  • Oxford v Cambridge Varsity Match

    Division: South Midlands

    Location: Oxford University Sports Centre, Iffley Road, Oxford.

    Details: This is the annual Oxford v Cambridge University competition, with teams selected by their respective universities.

    Totals from this can be used as qualification for the British University Championships.

    This is a BRITISH POWERLIFTING sanctioned event and can qualify you for all major British events for the next year (including British Universities). You must be a member of British Powerlifting for this event. If you do not have confirmation at weigh in you will not be allowed to lift.

  • British Women's Classic Championships 2020

  • Sheffield 2020 Powerlifting Championships

    Details: This an invitational international championships jointly organised by the IPF and SBD.

    12 men and 12 women will be selected by the IPF based on their performances at World championships.

    The Men's competition will be on the Saturday and the Women's on Sunday.

  • British University Championships

    Date: 04/04/2020 - 08/04/2020

    Location: Moulton College, Northants

    Details: Only members who satisfy the following conditions may take part in a FISU European University Championships:
    a) Be a member of the national Federation they represent;
    b) Be at least 17 and less than 25 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event; for 2020, athletes must be born between 01/01/1995 and 31/12/2002
    c) Meet the conditions laid down under FISU Art. 5.2;
    Art. 5.2
    Only the following may participate as competitors in a FISU IPF University Championship:
    a) Students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institute whose status is recognised by the appropriate national academic authority of their country;
    b) Former students of the institutions mentioned in a) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event;

    Lifters must have achieved the required qualifying totals in order to enter.
    THIS A CLASSIC COMPETITION

    The top five teams (male and female), based on IPF points will be invited to go to the University World Cup

  • SWPLA Open Men's Championships

    This is open to men in all age classes. Priority will be given to members of the South West region. Schedule of lifting will be determined after the closing date.

    If you want to enter as a guest (not a member of the South West region) please select the ‘Guest Entry’ product. These are not charged but are placed on a waiting list, if there are still places available after the closing date we will contact you for payment and confirm your entry.

    Once payment has been made an entry form will be emailed to you to be completed.

    There will be 110 places in total.

    This competition can be used as a qualifier for all of this year's national championships. All equipment used on the platform at this competition will be Eleiko including the bar, plates and collars.

    Closing date is 1st April 2020, there are no refunds after this closing date.

British Powerlifting is the only UK powerlifting organisation that carries out independent WADA compliant drug testing. In 2017 we conducted some 140 anti-doping tests, all at our own expense. GB lifters in World Championships are registered with the IPF for Out of Competition Testing (OCT).
