Competitions

British Powerlifting has a comprehensive competition programme starting at local level and progressing through national up to British Championships. These attract a large number of lifters, for example over 400 athletes competed in the 2015 British Classic Championships. We send teams to all European and World Championships across all the age groups and disciplines with a high degree of success.

You are never too young or old to make a start in powerlifting; competitors aged 14 year and upwards are welcome. Equally, you are never too old. Several 70+ competitors still represent Britain internationally and many 'masters' lifters only take the sport up in their 40s or 50s. Powerlifting is a great sport with an unrivalled camaraderie which promotes health, strength and vitality. If you decide to take your first steps in the sport and want to lift in an independently drug tested organisation with an established network of local divisions, choose British Powerlifting.

With changes such as, no music, no flashing lights, minimal spectators, smaller groups and more time to concentrate on your lifting.     Details: Portsmouth x Southampton University Powerlifting Varsity is coming back for the third year! The rivalry between the two universities has been fierce, and Southampton will be coming back to defend their two-year winning streak. Although 2023 Champions of the South Midlands University Championships, and silver medallists in 2024 - Portsmouth has not managed to beat Southampton in a head-to-head battle. Will they finally manage it this year?

    This competition is part of the main Varsity event, meaning that the score will be contributing to the main Varsity result. This year Southampton are hosting, so the two-year Champions will have the home crowd, on the own soil.

    Teams will be selected internally.
    Timings to be confirmed directly with lifters via their respective powerlifting clubs/societies.

    3. Institution administrator approves entry

    4. BUCS approves/denies entry into competition and publishes confirmed entry list


    The final Schedule will be published on the British Powerlifting website and via BUCS.

    Lifters who have not been approved by their University will not be on the final Schedule.

    Details: The Cold Blood Classic will be returning for another year with prize money, 60+ lifters, professional livestream and this time around we'll be running the show from an external venue! We're also collaborating with White Lights Media for top tier visual presentation, livestreaming and media packages.

    We want to do things a bit different with this comp and we will be basing the athlete list on GL points rather than a first come first served basis, meaning that this is a brilliant alternative for those lifters of a higher level who might not necessarily reach the British qualifier requirements this year but still want to attend a high quality competition.

    Fill in the qualifier form and submit your best total/GL points so we can then start the process of ranking and eventually announcing those who have qualified! If you qualify we will then get in contact with a link for you to sign up.

  • Super Training Team Competition

    Details: This is a team competition. Each team must have 3 members and must be mixed (2 women and 1 man or 2 men and 1 woman).

    Each of the team members is responsible for 1 of the 3 lifts (Squat, Bench or Deadlift) and all handling is done between the 3 lifters.

    Team scoring will be done by IPFGL points per lifter (calculated by their bodyweight and what they've lifted).

    Each entry is per team (3 lifters) and you won't need to give the 3 names until closer to the competition.

    This will be a British Powerlifting Classic competition and open to all divisions and age classes.

    The closing date is 06/04/2025, there are no refunds after this date.

    Details: British Powerlifting are pleased to announce some more detail on how athletes can enter the Northern and Southern Qualifying Championships, with each weight class winner to be granted a spot in the 2025 SBD British Open at Fitfest later this year.

    With 128 places available per competition (8 per weight class) pre-entry is now live and will close 12 weeks out from each competition. Once entries close the top 8 for each class will be sent payment details which must be paid within 72hrs of receipt (£50 Entry plus £20 Doping fee). Those who do not make the cut for the Championships will be placed on a reserve list (to be published once pre-entry closes), failure to make payment by those selected will result in withdrawal from the championships, and a reserve lifter being granted their spot. Should a weight class not be filled the remaining spaces will be distributed between other weight classes with the most applicants (to a max of 14 per weight class)

    All pre-entries have minimum Qualifying standard of 70GL, entries can be made, and a list of pre-entries will be published so athletes know where they are placed.
